Raped mothers get no D.P.B. — centre
PA Auckland A woman who becomes pregnant as a result of rape and who chooses to give birth should not have to name the father of the child in order to get the domestic purposes benefit, says the Auckland Rape Crisis Centre. This recommendation is among submissions the centre will make in a study of rape by the Justice Department and the Victoria University Criminology Institute.
A representative of the centre says that, under present legislation, no mother ■ who is unable or unwilling to declare the paternity of her child can receive the ’’ domestic purposes benefit. ; “She is thus economically ; penalised for the rape.” '. The submission says that instead of receiving the ■ domestic purposes benefit of $140.76 a week, the mother and child are eligible for the emergency maintenance allowance of $124.76.
