Life sentence for murdering landlady
PA Auckland An Auckland man was sentenced to life imprisonment yesterday after being found guilty in the High Court at Auckland of murdering his landlady in her East Tamaki home. Blain Verl Saies, aged 22, had pleaded not guilty to a charge of murdering Irene Eleanor Goggin, aged 25, on or about November 3. The jury returned the guilty verdict yesterday afternoon after a week-long trial before Mr Justice Barker. During the trial the Court heard how Miss Goggin had died from blood loss after suffering 27 blows to the head with a tomahawk, and further blows to the hands. The .Crown prosecutor, Mr Peter Kaye, had told the jury that Saies had made a written confession to the police in which he admitted attacking Miss Goggin with the tomahawk after she laughed at him. Earlier in the trial, Saies claimed he arrived home at 3 a.m. on November 3 and found his landlady on the lounge floor. He said he had given her
a soft-drink and then left in her car, arriving at a police station later that day to report a homicide.
