Navratilova keeps gatemen alert
NZPA London The defending women’s champion, Martina Navratilova, has been keeping the army of gatemen at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships on their toes by turning up at the All England Club on a bicycle. The Czech-born American top seed has been shunning the official cars which transport players to the ground, and opted instead to cycle to the stadium. The first time she arrived, wearing track suit, sunglasses, and headband, Miss Navratilova was asked for her ticket by the gateman, Mr Ted Edwards, aged 79. For several minutes the champion, aged 26, had to wait at the gate until an embarrassed Mr Edwards finally recognised her. “I just did not expect to see her there,” said Mr Edwards, who cannot boast the best of reputations when it comes to recognising celebrities. During his term of duty on the gate, which stretches back to 1963, Mr Edwards once turned Bing Crosby away from the ground. But in this case, Mr Edwards was unrepentant. “He did not have a ticket,” he said.
