Record response to fast
PA Wellington World Vision had a record response in New Zealand to its 48-hour famine, held at the end of March, according to the accountant of, the organisation, Mr Russell Boag. To date, $1,384,000 has been banked compared with $852,000 at the same time last year, said Mr Boag. He said that the final count could reach $1,420,000, a 59 per cent increase on the 1982 total. The largest proportion of the funds collected this year will go towards famine relief in Ethiopia. World Vision’s international partnership is running a $9 million relief programme there, concentrating on the drought-ravaged northern regions. About $24,000 has also gone towards rehabilitation in Fiji after the damage caused by Cyclone Oscar.
