Trial loading of milk powder

The Dairy Board is having a “trial” at Lyttelton next week when a shipment of milk powder for Peru will be loaded on a general cargo vessel. This is the first time the board has sent a chartered ship to load milk powder at Lyttelton. More vessels may call if the ship is worked successfully, according to a shipping spokesman of the board. The Lift-On, a 1598-ton vessel due at port on Tuesday, is scheduled to load 2000 tonnes of milk powder from Canterbury, Nelson, and the West Coast. Previously, milk powder destined for Peru from the top half of the South Island has been loaded on ships already scheduled to call at Lyttelton with other cargos. The Lift-On, sailing from Adelaide, will also load 550 tonnes of milk powder at Whangarei. She is expected to stay at Lyttelton two to three days. The spokesman described the size of the shipment as “just average.” He said it was part of a Dairy Board contract to supply Peru, which saw about six ships a year carrying milk powder from New Zealand to Peru.
