Proud News appeals at Blenheim today
By
G. K. YULE
Proud News could reinstate himself as one of the more promising three-year-olds in the slower classes in Canterbury when he contests the Marlborough Transport Handicap, the final leg of the T.A.B. treble at the Marlborough meeting at Waterlea Park today. Proud News had a stylish win in maiden company when making his race debut at Ashburton on June 3 and three days later he made
ground for fourth to Bee El in the Queen’s Birthday Stakes. He missed on the first day at Nelson, while his failure on the second day was due to a severe check just after the start. He should appreciate his return to an all-weather track and could well win. Avon Row is a newcomer to the circuit. He has shown sound form at times in Canterbury and could be a leading contender. Easy Adios, a winner at
Nelson last Tuesday, must again be considered, while Rokby, Noble Rex, Bugle Boy and Rosalie’s Bigshot will be other prospects. Redeemer, Our Julie and Reggae form a likely trio in the first leg of the treble, the Top Spot Handicap. Millions and Millions, Lorna Doone and Tiger Hunt will also have to be high on the list of possibilities. Proud to Be and Worthy Adios, winners of the two Cl races for trotters at the
Nelson meeting, could be too solid for their rivals in the 3200 m Smith Memorial. Both are proven stayers and on this type of track they should be the hardest to beat. Laracon did well when placed on the first day at Nelson, but broke several times on Tuesday. He, too, has shown sound staying form. Of the others probably Eastwood Mike, Without a Doubt and Majestic Cord will do best.
