Plans demolished
PA Invercargill The historic Lady Barkly railway station near Winton was mistakenly demolished yesterday by relief workers. The demolition has shattered a Winton man, Mr Noel Kerr, who planned to feature the station in a proposed pioneer village. The village proposal had been keenly endorsed by Winton residents as recently as Thursday evening. The station, which Mr Kerr had bought for $lO, was to have been a key
feature of the village, and he was aghast to learn yesterday that Project Employment Programme workers employed by the Southland County Council had demolished it. The council conceeded yesterday that a mistake had been made in identifying a building due for demolition. The assistant county engineer, Mr D. M. Nicholson, said this had been because of the misreading of a letter. “It will be investigated
and every effort made to reach a settlement with those concerned,” he said. Mr Kerr said the station was a historical link with the past as it was the only railway station named after a locomotive. He had used the station building as an example of what was needed for the pioneer village in his talk to a meeting on Thursday evening. “The money isn’t important. The loss of the station is. Even the signboard was taken away,” he said.
