Plan for new tug deferred
Plans to buy a new tug, at an estimated cost of $4.75 million, have been put "on ice," by the Lyttelton Harbour Board. The board’s port development committee heard this week that the Ports Authority, which must approve main capital spending at Lyttelton had decided to let the board’s application for permission to buy a new tug lapse. However, the committee recommended that the plan for a new tug be reviewed in a year, or sooner if necessary. The authority told the board that shipping lines had seemed reluctant to pay the higher port charges which would result from Lyttelton having a new tug. Shipping lines carrying coal did not comment on the possible higher charges. Consequently, the authority decided to let the board’s application for a new tug lapse. However, the board gained the impression that the authority did not disapprove its application. The general manager of the board, Mr lan Brokenshire, said after the meeting that the board would continue to monitor the situation in the next year. Lyttelton has two tugs, the Canterbury and the Godley. ARRIVALS Darwin Trader (6.30 a.m.), 10,602, Wellington (S.C.N.Z.). Kweilin (6.30 a.m.), 16,280, Auckland (P. and O.).
