Fencing champion
For the third time in four years Ernie Schicker of Whakatane is the “Golden Pliers Farm Fencing Champion,” beating seven other finalists in the event which was held at the Agricultural Field-days last week. He wins the golden pliers trophy, from N.Z. Wire Industries, Ltd, an overseas trip for two and prize money, for a total value of $3350. Kuiti, fifth place to Neville Prince of Waitotara Valley, sixth place to Allan Schuler of Rotorua, seventh to Nick Liesting of Pukekohe, and eighth to Tiwi Kanawa of Te Kuiti.. -T. The heats this year had 48 men competing to make the finals, including South Island fencers for the first time. Mr Schicker, who was in the United States doing fencing contracting work until a week before the field-days, previously won the event in 1980 and 1982.
