Telethon fever has spread as far as Singapore. For the first time hundreds of New Zealanders living there will make a major fund-raising effort and have organised a myriad of events to coincide with Telethon’s 24 hours in New Zealand.
One of the more unusual happenings revolves round a python, called Monty. The snake will be draped round a Singaporean’s neck and any New Zealander who is brave enough will pay to have his or her photograph taken standing next to Monty. Children from the New Zealand Forces School will exhibit a huge model lion, while 20 of them will perform a lion dance.
A relay team from the New Zealand Support Unit will hold a sponsored run round the island at at the end a soldier will be winched from a helicopter to present their Telethon donation.
In Christchurch, staff of C.B.A. Finance, Ltd, will hold a leapfrogatbon in Cathedral Square from midday today. They hope to challenge Westpac staff, but if these opponents fail to appear they will leapfrog against the clock. The two Lyttelton fishermen, Ray Frew and Tom Pokere, pushing a wheelbarrow from Akaroa to Christchurch, will be in the Tai Tapu area today. The Dunsandel Women’s Fellowship and Young Wives’ Group will hold a special Telethon family games evening at the Dunsandel Hall this evening, from 7.30 p.m., and at 8 p.m. Keith Duncan will begin his 24-hour pianoathon at the Occidental Hotel.
The Pohutukawa netball team will sell hot dogs and soup at many sports grounds round Christchurch tomorrow and tnmbers of the Linwood Baptist group will hold a workathon for the needy. The Waiau Citizens’ Association has organised a social evening at the Waiau Hotel tomorrow, the Waiau Rugby Club will give the gatetakings from its match against
Cheviot at the domain tomorrow afternoon; and Jeff Harrington will ride a horse from Waiau to the Christchurch Town Hall, leaving at 8 a.m. on Sunday. To guess how long his journey will take, contact R. Savage at telephone Waiau 395.
The D.S.I.R. and Canterbury Rowing Club will take part in a midwinter rowing regatta at Kerrs Beach from 11 a.m. tomorrow and members of the St George’s Badminton Club will begin their 12-hour badmintathon at the Baptist Church Hall, Colombo Street, Sydenham. The public are invited to attend both events and make donations to Telethon.
About 50 recovering alcoholics who want to give something back to the community for the help they have received will run from Hanmer Springs to Christchurch tomorrow afternoon and will collect donations from the public along their way.
Follow the sign posts to a flying display by the Christchurch Radio Flyers Club at Fernside at 10.30 a.m. tomorrow. Money raised by a gate collection and donation will be given to Telethon. Maria Slattery and two friends are being sponsored to walk from Templeton to the Town Hall in fancy dress and members of the Homes Park cub group have also been sponsored for a 24-hour gameathon at their English Street den tomorrow.
British Paints has put forward a fund-raising scheme that will not only raise thousands of dollars for Telethon but will put a sparkle into the homes of New Zealanders. The company will give 25c for every litre of Nu Vinyl, Ceiling White, Masta Gloss, and AU Purpose Undercoat sold to stockists before Telethon.
Similarly, Shell All Nighter service stations, Belfast Garage, Papanui Petroldrome Ltd, and Bruce Reid Motors, will give 50c for every litre of oil sold during Telethon. A fashion parade with musical entertainment will be held at Knox Hall, Bealey Avenue, at 2.30 p.m. tomorrow. Admission is by donation. Between 11.30 a.m. and 1
p.m. members of the Freeville Girl Guides will dress up for the occasion and collect money 1 for Telethon at the New Brighton shopping area. The Oxford Stock Car Club is sponsoring 10 people to push a vehicle from Oxford to the Christchurch Town Hall tomorrow and members of the Hurunui County Council temporary work scheme will push a bath from Amberley to Christchurch.
Members of the Wainoni Women’s Fellowship have organised a copper trail, cake stall, and carwashathon to be held in the church grounds, Avonside Drive, tomorrow morning and a group of Richmond School children will hold a variety stall outside the Stanmore Road shops. A cake auction will be held at the St Martins Presbyterian Church tomorrow at 7.30 p.m. and a variety of Indian food will be offered to the public at a food fair at Aldersgate, Durham Street, at noon. This has been organised by the New Zealand India Society. A number of Christchurch celebrities will sew nappies in the Cashfield Arcade from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The nappies will be sold for Telethon. The nappyathon has been organised by Pregnancy Help. Members of the Kaiapoi Boys’ Brigade will begin a 24hour raftathon at 6 p.m. tomorrow. Kevin Cross will start riding his exercycle; six members of the Canterbury and Westland Backgammon Association will begin their 24hour game; and a dartathon will start at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Colombo Street
