Decision reserved on motel extensions

A spa pool and 10 motel units may be added to an existing motel complex in Yaldhurst Road. A neighbouring resident had objected to the extension proposed by P. A. and J. L. Keep at 168 Yaldhurst Road. In a submission to a Waimairi District Council planning hearing yesterday, the objector said increased traffic using the motel entrance would cause more noise. Council staff recommended that the motels be approved if conditions were imposed. The assistant planner, Mr B. R. Croad, said that an

alternative motel entrance from Gatonby Place should be closed, reducing the traffic in residential streets. However, the council’s traffic engineer, Mr P. Atkinson, said that the Gatonby Place exit should be used to ensure smooth traffic flow on Yaldhurst Road. Mr Atkinson also recommended that another carparking space be provided on the motel site. The applicants agreed to plant trees and shrubs to screen the motel driveway from neighbours. The hearing reserved decision.
