Potato growers angry
Many Canterbury arable farmers are angry about the treatment of three growers of seed-potatoes by the Ministry of Agriculture. The Ministry seeks to recover its $14,000 court costs and witnesses’ expenses from the three growers who lost a High Court challenge last year to the Ministry’s authority and diagnostic procedure. The growers are only half-way through a 15-year restriction set by the Ministry when it claimed to have found potato cyst nematode, a disease of potatoes, in their 1975 crops. The growers, and a number of experts who have supported them, still maintain that the Ministry made a mistake. Report, page 8
