Oil exploration in Chathams?
Wellington reporter Minerals Exploration Company (N.Z.), Ltd, a subsidiary of Union Oil of California, has applied for seven limited-impact prospecting licences for the Chatham Islands. Objections to the application must be lodged with the Planning Tribunal. The area of the licences covers Te Whanga Lagoon and Lakes Huro and Rangitai.
According to reports the company plans to drill with portable vibration equipment and a diamond drill mounted on an inflatable raft.
