Sugar plant to stop today
PA Auckland The 130 drivers who have blocked sugar deliveries from the Chelsea refinery since last week decided yesterday to remain off work at least until Monday. Production at the refinery will stop this morning when all storage space will be full. The 130 sugar workers employed by the New Zealand Sugar Company, although not suspended, now have no work. They will meet today to assess their predicament. All seven ready-mix concrete firms in Auckland have closed and suspended 70 employees as the cement
workers’ strike continued. Companies within the building industry will be anxiously awaiting the outcome of a cement workers’ meeting today. The Auckland Master Builders’ Association said yesterday that more than 100 workers had been suspended throughout the industry because of a lack of cement. The association said many more suspensions were likely if the cement workers did not decide to end their strike which, like the sugar refinery dispute, is in support of the union campaign for a wage rise of $2O a week.
