Style v. steamroller

NZPA London Old-time tradition returns to Wimbledon’s Centre Court today with the appearance of a little known American, Trey Waltke, facing Ivan Lendl, who is yet to win a grand slam tournament.

Waltke may not set the world alight as a player, but as a fashion plate the 28-year-old has caught the eye of Wimbledon fans.

He has donned old-style long white flannels and baggy shirt, and despite the sometimes oppressive heat, he lasted out a torrid five set match with the veteran,

Stan Smith, in the first round. Waltke is keen to reveal his “new” gear to the fashion conscious Centre Court crowd. He will be the first player on the Wimbledon Centre Court to wear such, attire since 1946 when Yvon Petra, of France, won the title.
