Australians ‘perturbed’ by N.Z. investment ban

NZPA staff correspondent Canberra Australian industry is worried about the New Zealand ban on Australian investment in companies across the Tasman, and wants New Zealand to get the preferential treatment here it is'looking for.

A Confederation of Australian Industry spokesman has said that his organisation was “perturbed” by the New Zealand investment freeze, adding that it did not apppear to be in the interests of either country. “The tactic seems to be aimed at harmonising the investment policies in both countries and should be

dealt with by the Australian Government,” he said. The Confederation stand was that New Zealand had a strong case for preferential treatment in the light of the Closer Economic Relations. Government officials were waiting until New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Mr Muldoon, arrived yesterday before discussing his ban.

But the revelation this week of the month-old freeze has injected a note of controversy into Mr Muldoon’s visit, and the resulting publicity has ensured that it will figure prominently in talks on the investment aspects of C.E.R.

Mr Muldoon’s action has made sure that the issue will get attention this week.
