Tallboy heads north

Special correspondent Hastings

Hastings trainer, Mike Lange, has headed north with his good galloper, Tallboy, forgoing his home race meeting at Hastings. Lange has decided to bypass tomorrow’s Hawke’s Bay meeting with Tallboy and, instead, run him in the 130,000 Owens Trophy Race at Tauranga. Lange had the Owens race planned for the gelding months ago and thinks the horse has done well enough in the last few weeks to warrant the trip. Before leaving yesterday Lange worked Tallboy the reverse way on the plough at the Hastings track. The gelding strode out well over about 1000 m. He was timed over the last 600 in 40s,

easing down towards the finish. Tallboy found the very heavy track conditions against him when seventh over 1600 m at Awapuni last Friday. He was an impressive winner at Masterton last month and will again be ridden by Phillip Mercer tomorrow. With Tallboy scratched from the Mahora Handicap at the Hawke’s Bay meeting, the best Hastings chance in the race would appear to be Diploma. Yesterday Diploma worked with a stablemate, Rich Rogue, over 1000 m on the plough in Imin 3.85, the last 600 in 39.25. They started fast but were slowing towards the finish. The apprentice, Peter Fearon, has again been engaged to ride Diploma.
