Indoor bowls challenge
Canterbury will face its first indoor bowls challenge this season for the A. S. Paterson Trophy when it meets Ashburton in the Kearney’s Road hall on Saturday. To reduce travelling costs, the South Island A. S. Paterson Trophy districts have been regrouped. The central district consists of North Otago, South Canterbury, Ashburton and Canterbury; Hokitika, Greymouth, Buller, Golden Bay-Motu-eka, Nelson and Marlborough form the northwestern district; and the southern region comprises Otago, Central Otago, South Otago and Southland. A play-off at the end of the season will be necessary to find the southern representative to compete In the Welch Trophy contest which will be at Porirua this year. Canterbury has new-look combinations for its fixture against Ashburton. Alf Williamson and Leon McLennan exchange posi-
tions, Williamson skipping the four and McLennan playing at three. Lloyd Bellis will skip the other team which includes the in-form players, Vai McLeod, Maurice Berkeley and Maria Austin. They appear a well-balanced team. Ashburton’s team members performed creditably against Town in their recent match and they will get further practice against a South Canterbury selection before the challenge. Ashburton has a young but capable team and Canterbury might do well to remember that its nearest neighbour lifted the trophy from it several years ago. The teams are:— Ashburton: Jim Stewart, Alistair Keith, Murray Lister, Maxine Chapman; Eric Melton, David Fagan, Martin Nordqvist, Margaret Euer. Canterbury: Williamson, McLennan, Ora Bate, Marie Watson; Bellis, Vai McLeod, Berkeley, Maria Austin.
