Wage and price freeze
Sir,—A recent poll result showed that a big majority of people want the freeze to continue. On the surface this looks like an endorsement of Mr Muldoon’s policies if it was not for the fact that the people questioned had no real choice. They knew all too well that the present single-digit inflation has been artificially achieved and therefore reveals the tip of the inflation iceberg only. A three times bigger priece of inflation is lurking underneath the surface waiting to rip the flimsy Muldooneconomy to pieces. With a captain on the bridge who is devoid of any sense of direction, the ship of state just drifts along on a current of political expedience. Small wonder people say: “For Pete’s sake let’s keep the freeze!”—if only to delay the day of reckoning.—Yours, etc., G. H. KONIG, Pines Beach. June 20, 1983.
