Chilean policies
Sir,—The story “More unionists arrested in Chile crack-down” (“The Press,” June 23) is horrific. Amnesty International is at present running a campaign against torture in Chile. Many cruel abuses are positively encouraged, and indeed actively carried out, by the Pinochet Government. Amnesty International has published a 75-page report after making a fresh investigation of the accuracy of its information. In spite of persistent claims by the Government of Chile that it abides loyally by the highest possible principles of righteousness, its human rights record could hardly be worse. It has been criticised by many reputable bodies including the International Commission of Jurists. Trade unionists willing to act positively could well join Amnesty International. — Yours, etc., DAVID M. TAYLOR. June 23, 1983.
