Conservationists
Sir,—Regarding recent comments castigating conservationists by the Minister of Forests, Mr Elworthy. Surely conservationists have the right to comment (through written submissions, etc.) about the management of the vastly depleted native forests of the Kaimai-Mamaku region without being insulted. Is the Minister an elected representative of all the people? Are we a democracy? The Kaimai-Mamaku native forest represents only a remnant area of the once great expanse of forests that covered much of the Bay of Plenty-Waikato region. Adjacent to and accessible from the areas of relatively high population density of Auckland, South Auckland and Bay of Plenty, these forests deserve careful and balanced consideration. The recommendation that an independent commission be set up to provide more equitable com-
promise solutions to the problems associated with the rational management of our native forests should be contemplated. This would enable all viewpoints to be generally correlated, evaluated and considered without fear of bias or emotional outburst.—Yours, etc., R. H. A. BURNETT. June 22, 1983.
