New multi-processor

In the last few months Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) has announced a nurriber of new products in its VAX and PDP-11 computer families.

The VAX family is a series of 32-bit minicomputers. New VAX . products include:

• The VAX-11/782, a tightly-coupled asymmetrical multi-processor system. This system improves the performance of a VAX-11/780 computer by connecting together two 11/780s. One 11/ 780 is the primary processor and the other processor acts as an attached processor to provide additional computational power. The VAX operating system scheduler allocates compute-bound programs to the attached processor and programs that require input and output to the primary processor.

New products in the 16-bit PDP-11 family of minicomputers include:

. « The Falcon SBC-11/21 the cheapest and most compact processor in the PDP-11 family.

• The 11/23 Plus, a new version of the PDP-11/23 with support for up to one megabyte of memory, a floating point processor and a commercial instruction set.

® The RABO, a 120 M byte Winchester disc drive for larger members of the PDP--11 family. ® COBOL-81, a fast and compact version of COBOL for PDP-lls that has features that DEC expects will be included in the next ANSI standard for the COBOL language.

The new branch sales manager for DEC in Christchurch, Mr Geoff West, told “The Press” that the announcements , coincided with big reductions in the price of a number of PDP-11 disc and memory products. These are necessary moves if DEC is to compete against the rapid encroachment of microcomputer systems into minicomputer territory.
