‘Sleeping Dogs’ U.S. premiere

NZPA staff correspondent Washington The New Zealand film, “Sleeping Dogs," had its United States premiere at the week-end in a New York cinema which shows only Australasian films. Several private screenings have already been held for critics, according to Mr Andrew Fox, of Satori Productions. The critics were given kiwi lapel pins and fed on kiwifruit. A reception to launch the film was held last Thursday night by Satori and the New Zealand Consul-Gen-eral in New York. "Sleeping Dogs" was the first New Zealand film to be shown in the D. W. Griffith cinema, in mid-town Manhattan. Mr Fox said. The length of its run would depend on patronage. Attendances at the cinema had been good, Mr Fox said. Many patrons were American film buffs, but it was also becoming fashionable to seek out English-language films from other countries. "Sleeping Dogs,” a political thriller, starring Sam Neill and Warren Oates, has been shown throughout New Zealand. "Beyond Reasonable Doubt." the film of the Arthur Allan Thomas trial, is also likely to be shown at the cinema.
