Shipping Corporation chairman named

Parliamentary reporter. The new chairman of the Shipping Corporation will be its present deputy, Mr H. L. Julian, of Auckland. He will become chairman on April 18, on the retirement of Sir Thomas Skinner. Two other board members. Mr J. R. Maddren of Christchurch and Mr I. Mackay of Wellington will finish their terms on the board of the corporation on March 20. The three vacancies will be filled by Mr John Clarke, the former chairman of the Wool Board and a farmer at Clinton: Mr R. Parker, owner of the Parker Engineering Company of Auckland; and Mr Ted Thompson, the vicepresident of the Federation of Labour and retired general secretary of the Watersiders’ Federation of Petone. Mr B. Ryan an existing member of the corporation’s board and a Southland farmer prominent in meat exporting will become the

corporation's new deputy chairman. The new board will therefore consist of Messrs Julian. Ryan, Clarke, Thompson, and Parker, and an existing member Mr David Cooper, an accountant and director of Cooper Henderson Motors of Christchurch.

Announcing the appointments yesterday the Minister of Transport (Mr- Gair) said that Mr Julian was highly qualified for the post of chairman. Mr Julian had spent a lifetime in maritime activities as managing director of various maritime activities since 1956, as deputy chairman of the . Auckland Harbour Board, as ■ chairman of the Pacific Forum line and as deputy chairman of the corporation. “In annoucing the composition of the new board, I would also like to pay tribute to the work of Sir Tom Skinner, Mr Maddren, and Mr Mackay,” the Minister said. “These directors can be justifiably proud of the Shipping Corporation’s performance during their terms of office. “The Shipping Corporation has performed well under difficult trading conditions, and I am confident that it can continue to run profitably.”
