Trampers found in Westland
Greymouth reporter . Two Canterbury trampers overdue in the Landsborough area of South Westland on Sunday after a traverse from Mount Cook had been delayed by flooded rivers, they told their rescuers yesterday. After a request from the Timaru police, the Greymouth police headquarters sent .Constable Roger Millard, of Haast, to investigate, with the aid of a helicopter from Makarora on the Wanaka side of the Haast Pass. He found the two trampers, Allan Thomas, of Timaru, and David Clark of Christchurch, at Strutt Bluff in lower Landsborough yesterday afternoon.
Both men were fit and well and flown to Makarora. The rain, which raised the river levels, was accompanied by strong winds which damaged telephone communications in South Westland. The district engineer of the Post Office at Greymouth (Mr M. Woodfield) said last evening that trees had been blown across lines south of Franz Joseph and line gangs had been busy most of the day restoring links to Fox Glacier and Haast. Some circuits to Haast were still out of action, last evening.
