Carrington ends visit
; NZPA-Reuter Salisbury j The British Foreign Secre- • tary (Lord Carrington) left j Zimbabwe at the week-end * after a 48-hour official visit i marked by cordiality, but : also clear disagreement .over j Namibia and compensation J for white Zimbabwean ; farmers-whose land is being ' distributed to black peasants. It was Lord Carrington’s : first visit to Zimbabwe since ■ its independence nearly'two
years ago under the Lancaster House Constitution whose drafting he guided. His host, the Foreign Minister (Mr Witness Mangwende) was lavish in his praise for the “very distinguished visitor.’’
But on specific issues Lord .Carrington and the Zimbabweans did not see quite eye-to-eye. According to Government sources in Salisbury the Prime Minister (Mr Robert Mugabe) told Lord Carrington that the Government needed more money to buy land from white farmers to resettle two million black peasants. Britain has already committed f about JNZ69.6 million tb pay for land acquisition, on condition that Zimbabwe match it pound for pound.
