Shipping Corp. trophy
The runner-up last year. Chris Campbell (Spencer Park), was yesterday announced the winner of the New Zealand Shipping Corporation's "patroller of the year’' competition. Perhaps the most prestigious of the Canterbury Surf Lifesaving Association's competitions. it is awarded as the result of an oral test, a practical demonstration, a written essay, and an interview. As well as being a fine competitor. particularly in beach events and canoe paddling,
Campbell is his club's secretary, and was a senior patroller in the paid lifeguard system. The runner-up was Johanna Watt (New Brighton), a stalwart of women's events, surprisingly entered for the first time. No third placing was announced by the judges (Messrs R. Henshaw, representing the Shipping Corporation, and N. M. Duckmanton. with the three previous winners also assisting), who reported a very high standard. "It seems to get better every year," said Mr Duckmanton.
