Shipping news Protest yacht due to sail today
Pacific Peacemaker, the 16metre Australian anti-nuclear ketch, is expected to set sail for Mururoa Atoll at noon today. The ketch has been at Lyttelton since Wednesday, and those on board have been addressing meetings in Christchurch as well as stocking up .on provisions in preparation for its Pacific voyage. On board'are 12 people, including six of the Ethell family from Perth and three New Zealanders. It is planned to sail to Tahiti after Mururoa Atoll, and then on to an international boat protest at Seattle, Washington in August. This protest will be against the launching of a new United States Navy Trident nuclear submarine, the Ohio, at the Bangor Naval base. Mr Bill Ethell, the skipper of the ketch, mortgaged his Perth home to raise money to buy the $85,000 Pacific Peacemaker. Other funds came from $350 shares which ; Australian supporters bought' in it, and these will be repaid when the ketch is sold after the protest against the Trident.
