Schools’ event succeeds

The first Canterbury schools’ track cycling championship, an Italian pursuit for four-strong teams, was a resounding success at Denton park on Saturday. Run in conjunction with the New Zealand professional championships, and sponsored by Healing Industries. the three grades attracted a total of 30 teams, and two of the six finalists were from outside Christchurch. There was complete success for one of them, too, when Ashburton College won

the Debbie. Zanders shield, for girls’ teams, from Zanders’ own Christchurch Girls’ High School squad. The junior boys’ section was won well by Shirley Boys’ High School, from Timaru College, while Riccarton High School beat Christchurch Boys’ High School in the senior final. That was quite the most competitive grade, only a second separating the three

fastest qualifiers, Christchurch (2:0.5), Riccarton (2:0.7) and Shirley A (2:1.6). In the final, Riccarton did 1:58.9 to the 2:0.6 of Christchurch. Shirley’s final time in the junior grade was 2:8.6, easily accounting for Timaru (2:15.3). The Ashburton girls’ team did 2:23.3 in heading off Christchurch (2:26.0).
