Newmans in clean sweep of marching

The Newmans -Acme Pioneers marching teams from Christchurch gained an unprecedented clean sweep of the South Island championships at Dunedin on Saturday. The result was yet another triumph for Trish Flanagan, the Newmans senior leader whose experience and instruction also contributed greatly to the successes of. the junior and midget squads. Newmans almost took top points in every section of all three grades. The only exception -was in the midget display event, in which Newmans' trailed Edinburgh Guards (Dunedin) by one point in a contest which had only six points separating the first seven teams.

In the senior grade, Newmans won by 200 points from another Canterbury entrant, McAlpine Stars. Mrs Flanagan won the leaders’ title for the third time in her six years with the team, the reigning champion, Jackie Sibley (McAlpine) being placed third on Saturday. Marganta Watene led Newmans to victory in the junior section, convincingly beating McVicar Guards. The

junior display event was also closely-contested, • the first three teams being within six points of each other. Results.—
