Raglan land to be re-vested
PA Wellington The Government still intends to have the Raglan golf course land re-vested with the original Maori owners and their descendants, says the Minister of Lands (Mr V. S. Young).
He was commenting on the decision in the High Court at Hamilton last week-end.
“The judgment validated the lease between the Raglan County Council and the Raglan Golf Club. While the Government has always been committed to the re-vesting of the land with the Maori people it has always been recognised that any re-ves-ting order would have to recognise the club’s rights,” Mr Young said. Counsel acting on his behalf had made a formal approach to the Maori Land Court to clear the way for a further re-vesting application.
Mr Young noted Mr Justice Bisson’s statement that the Maori people’s moral claim to ownership of the land was not incompatible with that of the golf club to its lease.
“His Honour said that both claims can be recognised and this is what I seek to achieve,” Mr Young said.
