Table tennis predictable
Tile leading teams in the A grade winter table tennis competition ail won their fourth round contests without difficulty. Linwood 1 did not drop a match against Riccarton 11, although the three Linwood players were all taken to a deciding game in at least one of their matches.
Richard Dixon produced a couple of good spin serves at the right time to narrowly beat Peter De Boer in the third game, and Guy Halliburton took a game oft both Dixon and Mike Hamel.
Although decisively beaten by Dixon and Hamel, Colin Tipper succeeded in winning a game off Gary Saunders. The young left-hander, John Richards, overcame Les Stewart in two straight games to give Avonside 11 its only success against the favoured Avonside I combination.
Wayne Adamson, although a little shaky against Mark Clasper, continued his excellent recent form, winning his three singles in straight games. Maurice Burrowes had a close call against Clasper. He was down 14-17 in the tiilrd game, won the next six points, but Clasper drew level at 20-20 before Burrowes took the next two points for the match. With Ling Nan Ming winning his three singles and both doubles, Linwood H accounted for Avonside HI. 7-5. Barry Radford had a successful night for
the loser, beating Michael Frisk and Steven Dixon and gaining a game off Ling. Dixon beat Martin Kelly in three games and ‘Dixon defeated Mike Warren, .-dso in three games, to ensure Linwood its win. Tile aggressive Stuart Armstrong and the defensive John Armstrong both won all singles to keep Riecarton I in a frontrunning position. Kiccarton beat Selwyn-Dallington, 9-3, Bill Scott and Graeme Condliffe each beating Graeme Gall in straight games.
