Okarito forest
Sir, — The decision of the Minister of Forests to lift the moratorium on logging in south Okarito forest is grim news. This forest was recommended by the National Parks Authority, and many other organisations for inclusion within Westland National Park because of its national park qualities. That the Ruatapu mill should continue to operate is unquestioned, but south Okarito forest is too high a price to pay. Instead, timber should be taken from forests, such as lanthe, already modified by selection logging. It is apparent that windthrow and other losses in selectively logged areas are excessively high. One Forest Research Institute study area showed such losses w'ere 40 per cent greater than the mean virgin annual increment. The Forest Service should recover more timber from its present selection logging operations to allow the inclusion of south Okarito forest within Westland National Park, where it belongs. — Yours, etc., FRED OVERMARS,
Moana. April 19, 1979.
