Review of ' Road Code’
PA Wellington The “Road Code” will get a new image. Ministry of Transport staff are reviewing the booklet and some big changes are planned. Traffic engineers, instructors, and enforcement, research, and publicity staff will all have a hand in producing the new “Road Code,” which is due out in September or October. Changes in traffic regulations mean that parts of
the code need to be rewriten. The printing plates for the present edition were made up in 1974 and were changed when the traffic regulations were amended. But the plates have deteriorated and it is not possible to produce another edition from them. So a complete review of the code has been undertaken. One of the biggest changes will be the size: the code will become a
standard A5-size booklet with one, or at the most two, columns of print on each page. The type will be larger and the text simplified with references to diagrams. The Education depart* ment is being consulted on reading levels for the new publication. Drivers who want a copy of the present road code need not go without: 300,000 copies have just been printed.
