Brawl: 16 arrests
PA Timaru Sixteen persons were arrested after a brawl outside a Timaru hotel last evening. The brawl, between a group of locals and six crewmen of the naval launch, Hawea, resulted in three persons being admitted to Timaru Hospital — one unconscious. Three policemen suffered minor injuries. At its height about 35 persons were involved in the brawl and 12 policemen were called to the scene. Senior-Sergeant D. T. Crowe described it as a particularly nasty affair and said the brawl once spread
i ■ across Timaru’s main street. The roadway was littered • with broken bottles and : glasses. Senior-Sergeant Crowe i said no sailors were among ■ those arrested and it was be- , lieved those admitted to hospital were in a satisfactory • condition. Those arrested, who in- ’ elude six women, will appear in court today on a variety of charges, including assault i with intent to injure, assaulting the police and obstruction. Senior-Sergeant Crowe said inquiries would continue throughout the night and I more arrests were likely.
