Watchman’s assailant
Christchurch detectives still seek the knifewielding man who attacked and tied up a night watchman at Haywrights, l.td, on Tuesday evening. The police yesterday released an Identikit picture of the man. The incident began when the watchman went to investigate a noise in the sportsgoods section of the department store about 10.30 p.m. “The watchman thought the noise was made by another employee until he found : man crouching behind the gourmet bar,” said Detective SeniorSergeant M. J. Muddiman, of the Christchurch C. 1.8. The watchman was knocked to the floor and was bound and gagged by the man, who was carrying a long-bladed knife. By the time the watchman freed himself and raised the alarm, his assailant had escaped.
Nothing was stolen from the store, and the watchman was not injured. The man the police seek is a European, aged about 26, of slight build, with fair hair and a goatee beard. He was wearing a blue woollen jersey.
