The Sunfner lifeboat put to sea last evening after a light aircraft reported that a small fishing boat was in trouble in rising seas about 35 kilometres south of Motunau. The aircraft landed at Kirwee to raise the alarm, and rhe lifeboat Rescue 111 was launched at 6.25 p.m.
At 9 p.m. the Christchurch police were told by radio that the craft, the 6m Ariki Moana, from Kaiapoi, had been taken in tow by' the fishing vessel Viking.
It was believed that the Ariki Moana had sheared a propeller when she struck a rock, and that her crew of two was safe and well. The Rescue 111 turned back for Sumner after it was reported that the two fishing boats were making for Motunau.
