Golfer banned
Stephen Street, a Canterbury Freyberg Rose Bowl golfer for the last two years and a former New Zealand junior, has been banned for six months from competing in any event run by the Canterbury Golf Association.
The circumstances behind the stiff penalty imposed by the match committee of the provincial body resulted from an incident involving Street and another player | from a different club aftet the opening rounds of the Woodward Cup inter-club competition on April 1. The convener of the match committee (Mr G. P. Walker) said last evening that a complaint had been lodged against the behaviour of a Woodward Cup player. “After a full investigation by the match committee it was decided that this player be banned from all C.P.G.A. events until after September 30,” he said.
The suspension will mean that Street, the No. 2 player in the Harewood Woodward Cup team, will miss the remaining five rounds in the inter-club competition and several representative fixtures leading to the i selection of the provincial team for the South Island I inter-provincial tournament and the Freyberg Rose Bowl. The decision of the match committee has to be ratified at a full meeting of the management committee next month.
