Refugees dig in
[NZPA-Reuter Aranyaprathet, (Thailand) About 20,000 Kampucheans who have crossed into eastern Thailand to escape a Vietnamese-led as-, sault are refusing to return to their war-ravaged country, local officials have said in the border town of Aranyaprathet. The Kampucheans, mostly civilians crossed on Sunday about 40km south of Aranyaprathet and are camping in the open, resisting efforts by the Thai Army to persuade them to leave. They were pushed across by a two-pronged advance of Vietnamese-led forces of the new Administration in Phnom Penh, which has bottled up an estimated 60,000
Khmer Rouge soldiers loyal to the ousted Prime Minister, Pol Pot, and civilians in a small enclave of northwestern Kampuchea. , Thai officials said the Khmer Rouge had thrown up defence lines in this salient, jutting into Thai territory south of Aranyaprathet, and were slowing down the tank-led advance of their opponents. We 1 1-informed sources said the Khmer Rouge appeared to be preparing for a last stand in this area, and heavy fighting was expected in the next few days. This could be followed by a retreat into Thailand, the only escape route left to the Khmer Rouge in this part of Kampuchea.
