Medipet insurance

Medical insurance for dogs will be sold in New Zealand next month under a scheme backed by Lloyd’s of London. For an annual premium of $36, farm dogs, family pets and show dogs will be covered for up to 85 per cent of veterinerary and hospital costs for treatment of illness or injury. The scheme. called Medipet, is being marketed in New Zealand by Pet care (N.Z.), Ltd. Cover is similar to that provided

under the equivalent scheme in Australia in 1976. Death cover of $5O, to allow replacement of the family pet, is not meant to cover the loss of a trained working dog. Promoters of the scheme say pedigree and farm dogs should still be insured under livestock cover. Farmers with working dogs worth $3OO to $4OO are thought likely to Welcome the scheme. Medipet is investigating extension of cover to cats.
