N.Z. runner’s record
NZPA Washington Gillian File, of Auckland, has set a record in winning the women’s division of a seven-mile road race in Atlanta, Georgia, and earned a trip back to the United States in December. She trounced more than 300 women in the field of 1000 in the “Peachtree Battle” race, taking 50sec off the best previous mark for the annual event. Only 20 men beat her to the finish. The race is one of a series being run in various
parts of the country this sping. and the sponsor will fly Miss File back to the United States to run in the final in Florida.
“It was my type of race,” Miss File said. “It was good and warm and it suited me. The weather was great and I ran well.” The win was sweet for the New Zealander because it came on the heels of her disappointing performance in the Boston Marathon a week ago. Bitter cold and rain forced her out of the classic at the 10-mile mark.
