naries index rose 4.08 points! to 570.24. and B.H.P. gained 16c to 948 c. The daj. began quiet with; stocks easing slightly after) rhe week-end announcement) that Australian savings bond) and semi-government loans) rates were up. But, ahead of the official! announcement the market! learned that the March.quar-■ ter consumer price index rose only 1.7 per cent com- ■ pared with last week’s fore- : casts of up to 2.5 per cent. This was especially good ■ news and turned the interest ( rates announcement to ad-1 vantage as higher interest ■ increases had been tipped.
The banking sector made ! good gains with the Bank of iN.S.W. up 3c and the A.N.Z. up Bc. CSR was steady and Ansett, T.N.T., Myers and Woolworths made gains of a few cents.
