Sea-pay inquiry open?

The commission of inquiry into wage relativities in New Zealand ships will probably be open to the public. The inquiry follows disputes over relativities in the Cook Strait rail-ferries involving the Merchant Service Guild, Institute of Marine and Power Engineers, Seamen’s Union, and the Cooks and Steward’s’ Union.

All seafaring positions in the New Zealand Maritime Industry (Sea-Going) Award dated April 14, 1978, will be investigated by the commission.

The inquiry will examine salaries, wages, increments, allowances, and leave specified by the award for all shipping on the New Zea-

land coast in addition to the rail ferries. The office of the Minister of Labour (Mr Bolger) was not able on Friday to clarify whether the commission would be open to the public. “We are fairly bogged down with the Wesermunde business at present,” a spokesman said. The head office of the Labour Department, said that as submissions were being invited from any persons or organisations concerned with the matters, it appeared as though the inquiry would be open to the public. The commission’s first sitting will be at Wellington on May 22, when subsequent hearing dates and other venues for sittings will be announced.
