Union head resigns

The secretary of one of Canterbury’s biggest trade unions has decided not to stand in a coming election for his post. Mr C. C. McCready, the secretary of the 8000member Hotel, Hospital, Restaurant, and Related Trades Union, was assistant secretary of the union for 19 years until he was elected unopposed to fill a vacancy left by the resignation of Mr L. Short in June, 1974. Mr McCready, who is 54, said last evening that he was resigning for personal reasons which had nothing to do with the union.

He is expected to continue working for the union, but not as secretary. Nominations for that post closed last Friday. A postal ballot will be held in due course. Mr McCready is expected to announce his decision at the union’s annual meeting this evening.
