High-seas skulduggery reminiscent of the Spanish Main marked the student raft race from Kerrs Reach to the Wainoni overbridge, held on Saturday as part of the Capping Week activities of Canterbury University. A big crowd of enthusiastic spectators lined the banks of the Avon River to watch more than 35 entrants take part in the race. However, fair play went by the board as crews jostled with one another, and at least two rafts were consequently given special places, according to Miss Joanne Steel, of the Students’ Association. The invitation race was
won by the South Pacific Television crew, but the Pegasus Surf Club’s craft was interfered with and thus was awarded joint first place. Radio Avon won a prize for the unluckiest raft after it also came in for some foul play. The university’s Maori club (pictured), complete with grease-paint moko, won the students’ section, and another student entry, on which a car was floated, won the prize for the most novel raft. An entry from the Fire Service won the biggest raft competition, sporting a crew of 14, Miss Steel said.
