Thrilling bowls final

A perfect, shot with his last bowl gave Alan Roberts a 9-8 win over the New Zealand representative, Leon McLennan, in a thrilling final of the W. D. and H. O. Wells Working Mens’ clubs indoor bowls singles championships at Kearneys Road yesterday. Roberts had led 8-3 after six ends but McLennan tied up the game with singles on the next five ends. It was 8-8 on the final end with McLennan holding three shots when Roberts had the last say with a fine draw shot.

Hornby W.M.C. had tour players in the quarter-finals and Roberts, of Richmond W.M.C., beat one of them, Don Marshall, in that round, 12-7. Roberts then easily accounted far Frank Chapman, 16-5, in the semi-finals before coming across McLennan, yet another Hornby player, in the final.

McLennan had eliminated his former skip, Earl Chaney, in their quarter final with a good draw bow) on the last end to win, 9-5. and then was too experienced for Woolston’s Dick Annan in the semi-finals, winping 7-3. Results: —

Quarter-finals. — R. Annan 9, L. Miller 8; L. McLennan 9. E. Chaney 5; A. Roberts 12, D. Marshall 7; F. Chapman 10, Glasgow 8. Semi-finals. — Roberts 16, Chapman 5; McLennan 7, Annan 3.

Final.— Roberts 9, McLennan 8.
