Mount keeps 4-point lead

On a day when 21 goals were scored in six games, Mount Wellington maintained its four-point lead at the top of the Rothmans Soccer League points table with a resounding 4-1 win over Trans Tours United in Auckland. The win was one of the most comprehensive performances of any match featuring these two teams in the nine-year history of the league. Stop Out held on to second place with a good 2-0 win over Blockhouse Bay in Auckland. Its first goal by Derek Gibson-Smith came after only 25secs of play. Another quick goal came in Wellington Diamond United’s 2-2 draw with Eastern Suburbs in Wellington. Gary Welch opened the scoring for the Wellington club after 35secs.

The most surprising result of the day came from Dunedin where Courier Rangers scored three times in the second half to beat Dunedin City, 5-2. This means Courier is the only team, apart from the Mount, to have scored at least 10 goals so far in the league. Newmans Nelson United remains unbeaten after its 2-0 win at home against Manawatu United, while Manurewa recorded its first win of the season, beating Hanimex United, 1-0.

Clive Campbell continued his fine scoring run with another goal yesterday, which means he has scored in each of the Mount’s five games this season.

Johann Verweij was another to add to an impressive record, his goal for T.T.U. being his fourth, and T.T.U.’s sixth, of the competition. Results: Mount Wellington 4 (Clive Campbell, Bill de Graaf, Brian Turner, Tony Sibley), Trans Tours United 1 (Johann Verweij). Half-time 2-0. Dunedin City 2 (Jack McGillivray penalty, Ike Nitis), Courier Rangers 5 (Jack Shurrman, John Legg, Peter Henry, Joe O’Malley, Davis). Half-time 1-2. Blockhouse Bay 0, Stop Out 2 (Derek Gibson-Smith). Half-time 0-1. Newmans Nelson United 2 (Mike Kernaghan 2), Manawatu United 0. Half time 1-0. W.D.U. 2 (Gary Welch, Mike Simenoffl, Eastern Suburbs 2 (Alf Stamp, Earle Thomas). Halftime 24.
