Squash’s ‘keg race’
Paul McFadzien, running for the Christchurch club, was only 2sec off John French’s 1978 record of 2lmin 28sec when he won the annual squash players “keg race” around Hagley Park yesterday. McFadzien, a Canterbury squash representative, finished just ssec ahead of a former winner, Max Morrison (Suburbs), with the third place-getter another 6sec back. More than 50 runners completed the distance of over 6.5 km, some taking the race rather more seriously than others. Last year’s winner of the teams event, High School Old Boys, did not figure prominently this time and Suburbs won by 11 points from Bumsids No. 1. Results: Teams.—Suburbs, 34 points, 1; Burnside No. 1, .45 points, 2; Burnside No. 2, 3. Individual.—Men: P. G. McFadzien (.Christchurch), 21:30, 1; M. Morrison (Suvburbs), 21:35, 2; K. Wightman (Burnside), 21:41, 3. Women: Rosemary Megget (Suburbs), 27:04. 1; Leanne Alexander (Liswood), 2.
