As the early morning sun strengthens, a solitary shooter stands by a Marshland stream early yesterday waiting for a flight of ducks. The shooting season, which opened on Saturday morning, extends for six weeks.
While Saturday with its strong winds was a bad day for the multitude of ducks on Lake Ellesmere and a good day for the shooters, yesterday, bright and calm, was in the ducks’ favour. Some minor arguments broke out on Saturday over the pegging of shooting stands, there being
some conflict as to whether two weeks or four weeks prior claim was required. It turned out that Lake Ellesmere rules set the claim period at two weeks, even though it appeared to some that their licences said four weeks. As a result there were a few cases of multiple-oc-
cupany stands but differences of opinion were quickly resolved. A spokesman for the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society (Mr G. Mugford) said that several limit bags of 25 ducks were shot on Saturday, mainly at ponds north-east of the lake.
