N.Z. deal for Moscow Olympics TV

PA Wellington Final details of New Zealand television coverage of the 1980 Olympic Games at Mowcow will probably be known within the next two or three months. The head of the Broadcasting Corporation’s programme services, Mr A. Lewis, returned from Moscow on April 14 after viewing facilities which might be made available to New Zealand for televising the games, which will be the first held in a Communist country.

Mr Lewis said that he was quite confident the corporation would be able to do the job required, but the question of how much New Zealand would have to pay for television rights had still to be decided.

A “considerable gap” still existed between what the Russians wanted and what I New Zealand was prepared

to pay, said Mr Lewis. He did not disclose what the corporation had offered, but said that it was a six-figure sum. The next round of talks with the Russians, in two or three months time, would deal only with money, he said. Mr Lewis said that he believed the gap of opinion over costs could be narrowed considerably. “I believe we can get the facilities we require,” he said. The issue had to be resolved within the next two or three months because only limited facilities were still available.
